A New Model For Emergent Care
With an evolving landscape of consumer-based environments, “retail” healthcare providers, and portable technology, we are experiencing a new generation of Emergency Department design. Gone are the days of crowded waiting rooms, long wait times, and institutional surroundings. DCC was engaged to work on the 60,000 sq.ft. Expansion and Renovation project at RWJBarnabas Health, New Brunswick campus which expanded the existing space by 50%, increasing the potential patient capacity from 42 to 100.
A level 1 Trauma Center, the new ED features design details that adhere to an elevated, consumer-focused care model that enhances the patient experience in receiving emergency care. The project comprises a rapid evaluation triage approach, Care Initiation Area, 54-bed ED Proper, Pediatric ED services, Resuscitation, Imaging, and Behavioral Health Unit. Customized focal lighting and wood-look ceiling details, coupled with glass sliders on patient rooms and a cool color palette offer distinct wayfinding and reduce patient anxieties while honoring the facility’s strong, existing brand.
